An English teacher attacked with a knife in Maine-et-Loire

An 18-year-old student was arrested this Monday, May 27 after attacking his teacher with a knife in a high school in Chemillé-en-Anjou (Maine-et-Loire). Fortunately, the teacher's life is not in danger, according to authorities. The attacker was apprehended “very quickly” and taken into police custody. “The victim has a facial injury, but his vital prognosis is not in jeopardy,” specified the prefect, the prosecutor and the director of departmental services of National Education in a joint press release.

The incident occurred on Monday around 9:45 a.m., during an English class at the Hyrôme high school, which has 160 students. An investigation into “attempted murder” was entrusted to the Cholet research brigade. After the attack, the assailant left the scene by jumping out a window, leaving his weapon there, authorities said. He was arrested by the national gendarmerie, with the effective assistance of the municipal police.

“This young man, an adult, was completely unknown to the police, gendarmerie or justice services. He had never attracted negative attention within the establishment,” the statement said, without giving further details on the motivations for the attack.

For her part, the Minister of Education, Nicole Belloubet, expressed “deep shock and indignation”, adding: “My thoughts are with the victim and the entire educational community”. A psychological listening unit has been set up to support students and educational staff.
