Tensions between Israel and Iran: Macron urges Netanyahu to avoid escalation
As tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, French President Emmanuel Macron called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, August 7, urging to avoid further military escalation in the region. During this telephone interview, Macron stressed the importance of not entering into a cycle of reprisals.
The Élysée clarified that Macron had already sent a similar message to the Iranian president, emphasizing the need to avoid actions that could destabilize the region and endanger civilian populations. “A war between Israel and Lebanon would have destructive consequences for the entire region,” warned the French presidency.
This initiative comes in a context of great tension following the death of the Hamas leader in Tehran, attributed to an Israeli strike on July 31. The situation worsened with threats of retaliation from Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah promised severe reprisals after this assassination and that of Fouad Chokr, a Hezbollah military leader, killed near Beirut on July 30.
Faced with rising tensions, the international community is stepping up efforts to avoid an escalation. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington is working “day and night” to calm the situation. France, for its part, emphasizes the urgency of a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, including two French nationals, still held in the Palestinian enclave.
Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed that the absolute priority for France remains the massive and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He stressed the importance of protecting civilian populations and providing the necessary assistance to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
