New tensions in Amsterdam: pro-Palestinian activists arrested by police
New tensions in the Netherlands! The Amsterdam police have just carried out a the arrest of pro-Palestinian protesters during a rally held in the city centre despite an official ban.
The demonstration had been banned due to the violence, provocations and anti-Semitic acts that took place this week between Israeli supporters and pro-Palestinian activists, on the sidelines of a Europa League match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The situation escalated when several hundred people gathered, defying the ban and chanting pro-Palestine slogans.
Police, equipped with riot gear, moved in to disperse the crowd after several calls for protesters to evacuate the area. Arrests followed when some participants refused to disperse. According to local sources, the authorities justified the action on grounds of public safety and to avoid possible violent clashes.
