Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Place de la Nation in Paris this Sunday, denouncing a “presidential coup” and demanding a left-wing government. The majority of demonstrators were young people, joined by several elected officials from France Insoumise. Slogans such as “We’re here!” Even if Macron doesn’t want to, we are here” and “Youth piss off the National Front” were chanted.

According to a demonstrator, “It is problematic to dissolve the National Assembly and ultimately still not hear the voice of the people. » The rally aimed to demand the appointment of a left-wing government, but also criticized the Socialist Party for its refusal to support Huguette Bello as Prime Minister.

This demonstration comes a week after the second round of early legislative elections, which did not result in an absolute majority. The demonstrators want “Macron to appoint a government from the Popular Front”, accusing the president of “clinging to power” and insisting that “the left came first, the left must govern”.

On an improvised platform, a speaker also criticizes the president: “He wants a coalition with those who have sunk France in recent years. I ask the president to immediately appoint a Prime Minister from the NFP. » He also warns that in the absence of an NFP government, strikes could take place during the Olympics.

The mobilization, initially planned to demand that Emmanuel Macron respect the results of the election and appoint a figure from the New Popular Front to Matignon, transformed into a call to the Socialist Party. A protester criticizes: “On one side, we have Emmanuel Macron who uses the Constitution as he pleases and on the other, a Socialist Party with disproportionate desires. »

Another demonstrator adds: “We are coming to put pressure on the leaders of the different parties. If tomorrow the central bloc allies with the right, what do we do? They will keep power, still…”

The Socialist Party refused on Saturday to support Huguette Bello as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister, pushing her to decline the offer on Sunday. A rebellious deputy from Val-d'Oise concludes: "Are we capable of moving forward or not on a name other than that of Olivier Faure? This is the question we will ask the Socialist Party on Monday. »
