Macron/Zelensky/Xi Jinping/Putin: No Olympic truce!

18 May 2024 / Interviews

Emmanuel Macron will not win his case. Sport and fraternity definitely do not go beyond problems between countries. If the President of the French Republic ardently wished “ do everything » to have an Olympic truce during the Olympic Games, the Russian and Ukrainian camps do not see it that way.

That would have been too good... In an interview with AFP on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejects any idea of a truce in this war that began at the start of 2022.

“I said: Emmanuel, we don't believe it. Let's imagine for a second that there is a ceasefire. First, we don't trust Putin. Second, he is not going to withdraw his troops. Thirdly, tell me Emmanuel, I said, who guarantees that Russia will not take advantage of this to bring its troops to our territory”, detailed Volodymyr Zelensky.

Real lack of confidence in the enemy or a means of putting pressure on France to obtain ever more aid? Volodymyr Zelensky responds. « We are not against a truce, we are not against the end of the war. But we want a just end to this war. And we are against a truce which would play into the hands of the enemy. »

The problem is that the Ukrainian president is not the only one to publicly oppose this desired Olympic truce. During a trip to China this weekend, the Russian president Vladimir Putin did not provide details: his opposition to a truce has a fairly simple reason. The banning of Russian athletes from participating in the Olympics because of the invasion of Ukraine. No Russian athletes at the Games, no truce on the war front.

Understandable position international sports federations have never been able to coordinate regarding this Russian problem. With or without a banner, total or partial banning, suspension then re-incorporation into tennis, exclusion of French basketball players who play in the Russian championship... A total cacophony. No guidelines. And the total incomprehension of sports fans who still wonder why Russian athletes are punished for practicing their profession when they are not responsible for the actions of their government.

Vladimir Putin agrees: “International sports officials are today violating the principles of the Olympic Charter with regard to Russia by preventing our athletes from participating in the Olympics under their flag, with their national anthem, but they want us to comply with the rules that they impose on usTo demand something from others, you must respect the rules yourself. »
