Macron and Lula support “the Venezuelan people’s aspiration for a transparent election”

Following the controversial re-election of Nicolás Maduro for a third term as president of Venezuela, Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva affirmed their support for the Venezuelan people's aspiration for a transparent election.

Since the results were announced, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets to challenge Maduro's re-election, saying the electoral process was marred by irregularities. According to the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro obtained 51,20% of the votes, a figure widely contested by the opposition and part of the international community.

Emmanuel Macron and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed support for protesters' demands for transparent and fair elections. After a telephone exchange, the French president wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter):

“We support the Venezuelan people's aspiration for a transparent election and we call on the Venezuelan authorities to guarantee the transparency and integrity of the electoral process. »

The French presidency added that the two leaders insisted on the need for the Venezuelan authorities to publish the full minutes of the polling stations. This measure is considered essential to ensure transparency and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
