Champions League, Day 1: Lille logically beaten, Mike Maignan injured, Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise scorers and winners

17 September 2024 / Interviews

A strange first evening of the Champions League for the French. If Lille lost on the pitch of Sporting Lisbon (Portugal), after being reduced to 10 in the first half, Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappé scored. Mike Maignan, himself, was injured.

The injury of the Milan captain and leader of the French football team is worrying. Coming off with his head in his jersey, the French goalkeeper looked like he was on a bad day. Although rarely at fault, he was at fault for both of the opposing goals.

Hit in a clumsy duel with his defender (Tomori), the goalkeeper seemed to be really suffering when he came off the pitch in the 51st minute of play. And to top it all off, his Milan were beaten on their home turf at San Siro (1-3) by Liverpool. Bad start.

On the Santiago Bernabeu side, Real Madrid gave themselves a scare. Held for a long time by the Germans from Stuttgart, they relied on a magnificent deep pass from Aurélien Tchouaméni to the Brazilian Rodrygo. The latter offered the goal on a plate to Kylian Mbappé, who scored his first goal in the Champions League with the Merengue club.

Coming into play for just a few minutes, the Brazilian endrick shone again, running up the pitch and scoring his first Champions League goal to seal the victory, 3-1.

Note the feat of Harry Kane on this first day of the new Champions League, author of a quadruple with Bayern. The Frenchman Michael Olise shone too, scoring his first two goals in this competition that he was discovering this evening. Bayern Munich thrashed Zagreb 9 goals to 2!

As expected, Lille could not do anything on the pitch of Sporting (2-0), a team in form at the start of the season, led by the Swede Gyokeres, one of the best current attackers. The latter did not fail to get noticed, opening the score with malice in the heart of a very naive defense. It is already his 9th goal of the season…

Continuation of this first day of the Champions League this Wednesday evening, with notably PSG-Girona at the Parc des Princes, and Manchester City-Inter Milan at the Etihad Stadium.
