The new French left-wing coalition, the “New Popular Front,” strongly condemned the “Hamas terrorist massacres” of October 7, 2023. This unified position is the result of intense negotiations within the coalition, which includes La France Insoumise ( LFI), the Socialist Party (PS), Europe Écologie-Les Verts (EELV) and the French Communist Party (PCF).

The coalition's joint program, unveiled on Friday, includes several key points. The coalition unequivocally denounces the Hamas attacks which sparked the recent conflict in Gaza. This marks a notable shift, particularly for LFI, which had previously been reluctant to label Hamas a terrorist organization.

The program calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and demands compliance with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) order, which warns of the risk of genocide. The coalition also commits to immediately recognizing the State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel, in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

It proposes an embargo on arms deliveries to Israel and calls for sanctions against the Israeli government, described as “far-right supremacist” under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The program recognizes a worrying increase in racist, anti-Semitic and Islamophobic acts in France. This directly responds to controversial remarks by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of LFI, who downplayed the prevalence of anti-Semitism in the country.

Beyond Middle East policy, the coalition's 150-point platform promises to focus on social justice, including repealing the recent, controversial immigration law. During a joint press conference, the national secretary of the PCF, Fabien Roussel, underlined the coalition's commitment to fighting racism and anti-Semitism, highlighting the significant progress made in a short time. Aurore Lalucq, MEP for Place Publique, also welcomed the coalition's progress on these sensitive issues.

The “New Popular Front” aims to present a united front of the left in the upcoming legislative elections, proposing a transformative and progressive vision for France while tackling international and domestic challenges decisively.
