Joe Biden and Kamala Harris warn of the risks for American democracy in the face of Donald Trump

08 August 2024 / Interviews

In a recent interview with CBS, President Joe Biden expressed concerns about Donald Trump's potential behavior in the aftermath of the November presidential election. The outgoing president said he was not sure the transition of power would take place peacefully if the Republican candidate lost to Kamala Harris. This extract, published on Wednesday August 7, is part of a longer interview which will be broadcast on Sunday August 11. This is Joe Biden's first media appearance since he announced, on July 21, his decision not to run for a second term.

Kamala Harris, vice president and Democratic presidential candidate, shares these concerns. During a campaign speech in Wisconsin, she warned of the consequences of a possible Donald Trump victory, highlighting his statements that he would become a dictator on day one if re-elected. Harris criticized Trump for his alleged intention to manipulate the justice system against his political opponents and to repeal the Constitution.

Donald Trump, a former Republican president, has never acknowledged his defeat in the 2020 election. He has been involved in two impeachment proceedings and faced several charges related to his attempts to overturn the results of that election, as well as his role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Kamala Harris, accompanied by her new running mate Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota, used her speech to mobilize the “Midwest” electorate, emphasizing the importance of the middle classes in a “normal America”. She also managed to narrow the gap with Donald Trump in the polls, placing the two camps neck and neck three months before the elections.
