Paris Olympics: 41 prison sentences handed down since the start of the Games
As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games approach their conclusion, the Ministry of Justice shared, this Friday, August 9, a first legal assessment with BFMTV. Since the launch of the event on Wednesday July 24 until Thursday August 8, 181 legal cases directly linked to the Olympic Games have been handled, of which 174 resulted in a criminal response.
Among these cases, 41 prison sentences were handed down, and 72 people were found guilty. The most frequent offenses include intentional violence, traffic violations, as well as violations related to illegal drone flights.
These legal cases did not only concern spectators or tourists who came to enjoy the Games. Some also involve athletes. For example, an Australian hockey player was arrested and taken into custody for acquiring drugs, while a Brazilian tourist was given a ten-month suspended prison sentence for counterfeiting Olympic medals.
Despite these incidents, the Ministry of Justice welcomed the general smooth running of the Games, emphasizing the crucial role played by law enforcement. With 35 agents deployed across France, security around the competition sites has been largely ensured. The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, recently announced a 000% reduction in violent thefts and a 24% reduction in acts of violence in transport since the start of the Olympics, demonstrating the effectiveness of security measures. set up.
