Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Emmanuel Macron defends Thomas Jolly against cyberharassment
President Emmanuel Macron expressed his outrage at threats and cyberharassment targeting Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
During his visits to several Olympic sites this Friday, Emmanuel Macron strongly condemned the attacks against Thomas Jolly. “Nothing justifies threatening an artist,” he declared, saying he was both “scandalized” and “sad” by the situation. The Head of State recalled that “the French were very proud of this ceremony”, stressing that France had shown “its audacity” and “the artistic freedom which is appropriate”.
In response to the threats, the Paris prosecutor's office opened an investigation into cyberharassment. Thomas Jolly filed a complaint, claiming to be the target of threatening and abusive messages on social networks. These attacks falsely criticize his sexual orientation and his supposed Israeli origins.
Emmanuel Macron insisted on the importance of respecting artistic freedom, which was a key element of the opening ceremony of the Games. According to him, the ceremony succeeded in reflecting the diversity and audacity of France, honoring the country's values of freedom and creativity.
