Taxes: Darmanin warns the Barnier government against any increase
The debate over a possible tax increase is intensifying within the coalition between LR and the central bloc, while Michel Barnier, recently appointed Prime Minister, is exploring this option to deal with a difficult budgetary situation. This prospect has sparked strong opposition, notably from Gérald Darmanin, the resigned Minister of the Interior and figurehead of the presidential majority.
Invited this Wednesday, on the show Les 4 Vérités on France 2, Darmanin firmly rejected the idea of joining or supporting a government that would increase taxes. "It is out of the question for me to participate in a government that is not clear on the question of taxes," he declared, adding that "increasing taxes is the easy way out." This position reflects that of the presidential camp, which opposes any increase, fearing negative repercussions on the economy.
For several days, rumors have been circulating about a possible tax increase wanted by Michel Barnier, although the Prime Minister has not yet explicitly confirmed this possibility. However, his openness to "tax justice" suggests to some observers, including Darmanin, that an increase could be considered. In response, Gabriel Attal, also an influential member of the former Macron government, asked for clarification on the political line of the new Prime Minister before considering any participation in his team.
The subject of taxes is therefore shaping up to be a major point of tension between Barnier and Emmanuel Macron's supporters, as the new Prime Minister attempts to form his first government.
