François-Xavier Bellamy ready to vote for the national rally in the event of a duel with the far left
Guest of the show Ma France on France Bleu, François-Xavier Bellamy, newly assuming governance of the Republicans with Annie Genevard since the exclusion of Éric Ciotti on Wednesday, announced that he would vote for the National Rally in the second round of elections legislative elections if his party was not present there. “If, unfortunately, I were unable to vote for a candidate from my political family in the second round, I assume that indeed, for me, the greatest danger for France is the arrival to the power of the far left of Jean-Luc Mélenchon,” he declared.
During his speech, the MEP reaffirmed the determination of his political party at the heart of these legislative elections: “Obviously, we will have candidates from our political family everywhere in France. These candidates are the best bulwark against the far left and the best alternative against Macronism.” Indeed, Bellamy considers that the main danger for France during this difficult political period remains the far left, which he accuses of “covering up anti-Semitism”. The latter thus declared: “For years, we have been told that we must block what is destroying the Republic, block anti-Semitism, block racism. Where is anti-Semitism today? Where is the racism? They are on the extreme left.” He also took the opportunity to denounce the fact that Olivier Faure “does not rule out” that Jean-Luc Mélenchon becomes Prime Minister.
Opposed to the alliance with the National Rally desired by Éric Ciotti, François-Xavier Bellamy's voting decision does not, however, fit into a line of Republican unity. Indeed, no consensus on a potential strategic vote in the second round of the election has been established by all party members. The latter even seem divided on the question, since Florence Portelli, vice-president of the party, announced that she would vote blank if this situation were to arise.
