Resignation of the director: Islamism wins at the school of the Republic

March 27, 2024 / Radouan Kourak

In the wake of the tragic events involving Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard, the director of the Maurice-Ravel high school in Paris was forced to resign due to Islamist threats, which followed a request to a student to respect the law by withdrawing her veil.

Although the reasons given vary, the result remains the same: the director of the Maurice Ravel school campus in Paris announced his resignation due to online death threats after an incident that occurred at the end of February with a student concerning the wearing of the veil, according to an internal message from the establishment confirmed by the Paris rectorate last Tuesday. The rectorate, however, did not confirm the reasons for his resignation for security reasons. A new director was appointed and began his duties on March 25.

The new interim director, appointed by the Academic Department, sent a message to the educational community explaining that he would remain in post until next July.

Following a dispute with a student over wearing the veil on February 28, online death threats were made against the resigned director of the Maurice Ravel high school and college, located in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. According to the prosecution, the director had asked three students to remove their veil, but one of them, an adult and studying in BTS, had ignored his request, thus leading to an incident. Death threats were then made against the director on the Internet.

The Minister of National Education, Nicole Belloubet, visited the Ravel high school at the beginning of March to express her support for the director, condemning the “unacceptable attacks”. A 26-year-old man from Hauts-de-Seine was arrested for making death threats against the director on the Internet and is due to appear on April 23 in Paris. Another man, arrested in mid-March in Trouville (Calvados) as part of the investigation, was released.

This affair is widely seen by many observers as a crushing defeat and a blatant injustice with regard to respect for the fundamental principles of society.
