Darmanin leaves the Ministry of the Interior after “the best years of his life”

20 September 2024 / Interviews

Gérald Darmanin, who has served as Minister of the Interior since 2020, officially announced this Friday, September 20, that he is leaving his position after more than four years at Place Beauvau. He will join the National Assembly as a member of parliament for Ensemble pour la République du Nord.

In a letter published on his X account, the former minister sent a farewell message to the agents of the Ministry of the Interior, expressing his "deep gratitude" for their work and dedication. He described his years at the head of the ministry as "the most beautiful and intense" of his life, emphasizing the deep attachment he developed for this "magnificent administration."

During his term, Gérald Darmanin has weathered major crises, from Covid-19 to attacks, including the riots of summer 2023. He took advantage of this opportunity to highlight the reforms accomplished, in particular the "separatism" law and the adoption of the European migration pact, projects which, according to him, seemed unrealizable to many.

He also wanted to thank President Emmanuel Macron for giving him the means, both financial and political, to carry out his mission.

After Beauvau

While Gérald Darmanin was aiming for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs in Michel Barnier's government, he was ultimately not selected for this role. Bruno Retailleau, leader of the Les Républicains senators, is tipped to succeed him at the Interior Ministry. Darmanin, for his part, will return to the benches of the National Assembly, where he will continue to sit as a member of parliament for the North.

In his last message, he did not fail to send a final greeting to the police, thanking them deeply for their commitment and loyalty during his mandate.
