Booker Prize 2024: a largely female and international selection
The prestigious Booker Prize 2024 shortlist was announced on 16 September, featuring five women among the six authors in the running for the renowned literary award. This year, the writers come from a diverse range of backgrounds: the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and for the first time, a Dutch author. The winner of the prize, who will be crowned on 12 November in London, will receive £50 (around €000).
Jury chair Edmund de Waal noted that the selected works had left a deep impression on the jury, inspiring them not only to read, but also to create. The shortlisted novels, ranging from family drama to science fiction to thriller, reflect the diversity of contemporary voices in English-language literature.
Among the favorites are: Creation Lake by American Rachel Kushner, already a finalist in 2018, as well as Orbital by British author Samantha Harvey, who immerses her readers in a space adventure. Another highlight: the presence of Yael van der Wouden, the first Dutch woman to compete, with her novel The SafekeepAll these authors will compete for the prestigious award, after being selected from 156 works published between 2023 and 2024.
