Bernard Cazeneuve: a possible return as Prime Minister?

06 August 2024 / Interviews

The French political scene is animated by a summer rumor: Bernard Cazeneuve, former Prime Minister of François Hollande, could return to the forefront by forming a government of national harmony. This idea gained momentum thanks to a video recently shared on social networks where Cazeneuve advocates moderation and compromise. Questioned by Darius Rochebin, he affirmed his availability to act collectively, if necessary, while declaring that he was “totally disinterested” in the idea of becoming Prime Minister again. However, his comments suggest that he does not rule out this possibility.

Emmanuel Macron, on vacation in Brégançon, seems to be considering this option. According to certain sources, the President is considering two potential candidates for the position: Xavier Bertrand, to represent the right, and Bernard Cazeneuve for the left. The daily Le Parisien claims that Cazeneuve even spoke by telephone with Macron.

Cazeneuve, recognized for his stature as a statesman and his past as Minister of the Interior during the 2015 attacks, could attract members of the government. His firmness on issues of secularism and security makes him attractive to some on the right, although his legacy is not unanimous on the left. The New Popular Front, in the majority in the last legislative elections, prefers the name of Lucie Castets for Matignon. Cazeneuve, who left the Socialist Party in 2022 after Nupes' agreement with La France insoumise, remains a controversial figure.

His relations with Jean-Luc Mélenchon are notoriously tense, particularly due to the 2017 law on the use of weapons by the police. However, with Fabien Roussel of the Communist Party, the exchanges are more cordial. Despite his popularity in certain circles, Cazeneuve has refused any recent candidacy, whether for the European or legislative elections, preferring to stay in the background.

With his sober style and measured rhetoric, Bernard Cazeneuve remains an enigma in the French political landscape. His possible appointment would largely depend on Emmanuel Macron's strategic decisions, leaving many questions unanswered.
