Radio audiences: France Inter strengthened, Europe 1 makes a comeback, RTL down

18 April 2024 / Interviews

Recent audience data published by Médiamétrie this Thursday, April 18, 2024 for the January-March 2024 wave provided clarity on emerging trends and significant changes in the world of radio in France. At the heart of this analysis is France Inter, the public station that has not only maintained its dominant position but also reached new heights, establishing a historic milestone in the French radio industry.

With an impressive number of 7,18 million daily listeners over this period, France Inter set a new historic record, far surpassing its previous results. This remarkable performance, which represents an increase of 144 listeners compared to the previous year, testifies to the relevance and quality of its programming in a constantly evolving radio landscape.

However, this resounding success of France Inter stands out from a darker context for other major players in the industry. RTL, traditionally a serious competitor, experienced a significant decline with a loss of 233 listeners over one year. Likewise, Franceinfo also suffered a decline, losing 000 listeners during the same period.

Despite these challenges, a ray of light is emerging with the rise of Europe 1. For several years, the station has undertaken a recovery process with a programming strategy focused on current affairs and debate programs. The results are promising, with a constant increase in its audience and a growth of 223 listeners over one year.

This remarkable progress by Europe 1 illustrates a broader trend in the French radio sector. While some stations face challenges, others are able to stand out by adapting their content and meeting listeners' changing expectations. France Bleu and France Culture, for example, have also recorded encouraging progress, thus reinforcing the diversity and vitality of the French radio landscape.
